Multi-Stakeholder Climate Change Dialogues
Through multimedia channels, events and media training, COMplus multi-stakeholder dialogues generate public support for reducing greenhouse emissions and promoting the use of ecosystem management to challenge climate change.
One successful joint programme during 2009-2010, working with the Global Legislators Organization (GLOBE) , targeted legislators, the business community, and civil society organisations. This strategic partnership shadowed the G8 and G20 Summit process through the Japanese G8 Summit in 2008, regional summits and COP 15 in Copenhagen in 2009.
Legislators' dialogues on climate change and illegal logging were part of the process, and COMplus brought a large group of journalists and civil society representatives to these major events.
GLOBE Rome Legislators Forum
Rome, Italy (June 2009)
The forum was hosted by the Italian Congress and included more than 100 legislators from the G-20 and other emerging economies, African countries and Denmark. Also in attendance were business leaders from leading companies, including Shell and Petrobras, and civil society groups such as IUCN and WWF. The forum achieved a major breakthrough by reaching an agreement on key principles for a post-2012 fair and equitable climate change agreement, which was forwarded to the G-8 and G-20 leaders. COMplus brought 30 journalists from developing countries to ensure extensive coverage to the developing world.
Participating journalists represented the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, India, Mexico, Peru, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and Uruguay.
GLOBE Copenhagen Legislators Forum
Copenhagen, Denmark (October 2009)
GLOBE and the COMplus alliance organised the GLOBE Copenhagen Legislators Forum, an initiative supported by the Prime Minister of Denmark and the Chair of the UNFCCC COP15. The Forum focused on developing a common legislative platform of practical actions and measures that the parliaments of major economies could use.
GLOBE provided a forum for the convergence of national positions in the run-up to COP15 -particularly for the U.S. and China. As a counterbalance to the role of governments at the UN Climate Change Conference (UNCCC) in Copenhagen in December, GLOBE's shadow negotiating process allowed legislators to test the limits of what was possible through a unique process of collaboration and coordination.
Participants at the forum included Lars Løkke Rasmussen MP, Danish Prime Minister and host of the UNFCCC COP15; Danish Minister Connie Hedegaard MP, Chair of the UNFCCC COP15; Rear Admiral Nils Wang, Rear Admiral of the Danish Fleet, as well as hundreds of legislators from the G-20 group of countries. COMplus cooperated on all outreach activities, including the sponsorship of 30 journalists from the developing world.
